- Do your research on the company you are applying to (3 pages)
- Customize your coverletter for each company you are applying (2 pages)
- Begin with a compelling paragraph (3 pages)
- Emphasize results, not responsibilities (2 pages)
- Wrap up with a strong closing (2 pages)
- Remember to proofread your coverletter (3 pages)
The upside is the pointers given are fair and to the point, and the author has experience as a hiring manager. They are a good reminder to get the basics done. There are a few pearls of advice worth being reminded of, though basic. For instance, "you need to know the name of the hiring manager".
I gave it three stars because it lacks concrete examples of coverletters and I find its advice very basic to justify charging for it. That being said, for prime members (currently $0) it is absolutely worth the read and at its regular price of $1 "why not?".

It was helpful, but I wish it had addressed a wider variety of options, not just those for high level positions.
This is a perfect example on writing a great cover letter, I found it very informational, short, to the point and one should not have any problem following his plan to land the job they are applying for. This cover letter lets you get personal with the hiring manager, I definitely think this would get the attention of the hiring manager, along with bringing out the best you have to offer also. An excellent read!
There are plenty of books, guides, websites and companies that will help you to write your C.V. or résumé, but very few that focus on your cover letter. This frequently overlooked part of your job application can more often than not, lead to your résumé never reaching the intended recipient - therefore being a total waste of your time. 'Insider Tips On Writing An Effective Cover Letter' will show you exactly how to make sure your cover letter goes straight to the right person and ensures they will really WANT to read your résumé - straight away!
I've read A LOT of books on cover letters, and this is the only one that I have found useful. No fluff, no movie references, no long-winded explanations about the writer and his life. There's just pragmatic, timeless advice research your target. It's a short manual that's appropriate for the subject. Thank Tom for this!
Applying for jobs is though enough on its own, much less trying to craft the prefect cover letter and resume. This book helps make the cover letter bit a little easier. If you are just starting out with your first job search, or are trying to get back in the game this book will be very helpful to you, it has a step by step guide on how to craft the cover letter in order to get results. I also like that there are numerous examples of each step, and the book mentions some great tips on ways to word things that I had not thought of. Well worth the small cost a great reference guide.
This book contains some great advice on writing a cover letter that will stand out from the rest of the stack. I also liked the fact that the author was a former hiring manager in the corporate world, so he has the experience and knows what works and what doesn't work.
This book is great for anyone who needs help in writing a cover letter.
In today's competitive job market writing a cover letter that will stick out from others and immediately grabs a hiring manager's attention is very important for the job seekers.
Many people don't understand that a hiring manager can find out a lot of information about the applicant's work habits just from reading the cover letter.
This book was worth the purchase.
I'm giving this book Four Stars out of Five, but I hope you will read my review in full so you won't be surprised. If I could, I would give it Five Stars for content, Two Stars for presentation, and Two Stars because so much is left out.
I like what Mr. Nixon has to say and I think you'll get your money's worth as long as the price remains under $1.00. It is very short and the writing does not follow the author's advice about writing cover letters. He may have not read his chapter titled, "Reread, Review, Revise," because if he had, the book would have been easier to read.
Not only should the author demonstrate a good cover letter in his description of one, I think it would be nice to include an example or two.
